Davison Township is moving ahead with a new township hall and police station on 40 vacant acres on the north side of Davison Road, between North Gale Road and Aloha Street. The Board of Trustees voted 5-0 on Feb. 9, 2026 to approve the Davison Road location (Davison Township Board minutes, February 9, 2026), and on July 13 the board approved a contractor for the building on a 3-2 roll call (Davison Township Board minutes, July 13, 2026). The architect has put the cost of the new building at $11.343 million (Genesee County View, February 5, 2026).
The current offices on Irish Road date to 1980
Township business and the police department now share the building at 1280 N. Irish Road. At a special meeting on Jan. 29, 2026, architect John Gazall of Gazall, Lewis & Associates told the board and residents the building was constructed in 1980, offers about 12,500 square feet, and is cooled through duct work that is 90 percent cardboard (Genesee County View, February 5, 2026). The meeting minutes record the same figures and note a roof that is about 20 years old and code compliance updates the building would need (Davison Township special board minutes, January 29, 2026).
"We don't see that in the industry anymore," Gazall said of the cardboard duct work (Genesee County View, February 5, 2026).
Gazall compared two paths. Renovating the existing building and adding an 8,410 square foot police station next door would cost $13,606,000, plus $1 million to $3 million to relocate township offices and police while the work was done. A new building on Davison Road would cost $11.343 million for about 22,500 square feet, plus a proposed 2,980 square foot basement (Genesee County View, February 5, 2026). The township's own minutes round those figures to $14 million and $11 million (Davison Township special board minutes, January 29, 2026).
"Let's not get crazy," Gazall said. "We don't need a Taj Mahal. It's just a mainstream build; composite siding and asphalt shingles" (Genesee County View, February 5, 2026).
Police Chief Jay Rendon confirmed at that meeting that a gun range included in the original plans for the new site had been removed after residents expressed concerns about noise and safety (Genesee County View, February 5, 2026).
The land was bought in 2023 and the debate ran more than a year
The township paid $300,000 in 2023 for the 40 acres, which sit near John's Pizzeria on Davison Road (Genesee County View, January 16, 2025). In January 2025, a motion by Supervisor Jim Slezak to approve the new hall died for lack of support, and trustees called for a public workshop first (Genesee County View, January 16, 2025).
A year later, on Jan. 12, 2026, the board again held off on a vote and decided to hold a special meeting where the public could learn more and ask questions (Genesee County View, January 22, 2026). One resident told the board in January, "No one has given me a concrete answer as to why you can't build a new complex out front and then tear down this building" (Genesee County View, January 22, 2026). After the Jan. 29 presentation, another resident said, "Once got the information I'm onboard with a new building" (Genesee County View, February 5, 2026).
On Feb. 9, the motion to approve the Davison Road location, made by Clerk Michael T. Leffler and seconded by Slezak, carried with all five members voting yes (Davison Township Board minutes, February 9, 2026).
A builder was chosen in July on a split vote
The township's request for proposals sought a construction manager for a Township Administration Building with an integrated police station, "approximate 23,000 sq. ft., single story with partial basement," with submissions due May 4, 2026 and a late fall construction start anticipated (Davison Township RFP, April 2026). At the May 11 board meeting, Slezak reported the township had received eight bids (Davison Township Board minutes, May 11, 2026).
On July 9, four firms presented to the board at a special meeting: DCC, Siwek, Sorensen Gross and Lurvey (Davison Township special board minutes, July 9, 2026).
On July 13, the motion "to approve the contractor for new township building" passed with Trustee Matthew Karr, Leffler and Trustee Lori Tallman voting yes, and Slezak and Treasurer Travis Howell voting no. The minutes do not name the firm (Davison Township Board minutes, July 13, 2026). On Aug. 10, the board designated Slezak and Tallman as its representatives for the Township Hall Construction Project (Davison Township Board minutes, August 10, 2026).
The Irish Road site would be sold under the current plan
Under the plan described in January, staff would stay at the Irish Road offices until the new building is finished. The old building would then be demolished at a cost of $95,000, the Veterans Memorial would move to the new site, and the Irish Road property would be sold. Slezak has estimated that property's value at $500,000 to $800,000, and said the township could keep a portion to maintain the Black Creek Trail trailhead behind the current offices (Genesee County View, January 22, 2026). These are plans, not completed actions.
