Atlas Township Is Mapping Where a Fire Station Could Go. The Site Plan Costs $2,000.

The Atlas Township Board of Trustees voted 4-0 on Aug. 17, 2026 to spend $2,000 on a site plan for a possible fire station on property next to the township hall. Township Treasurer Ann Marie Moore was absent (The Citizen, August 29, 2026). In September 2025 the township bought about seven acres just south of the hall for $135,000 (Atlas Township Resolution 25-23, September 10, 2025).
The site plan is preliminary
"We reached out to an architect and walked the property," said Township Supervisor Jim Busch. "The site plan will designate where the buildings and driveways would be located" (The Citizen, August 29, 2026).
The Citizen reported that the site plan would be preliminary and subject to change (The Citizen, August 29, 2026). The vote pays for that plan, not for construction.
The land purchase came first
Township Resolution 25-23, dated Sept. 10, 2025, is titled "Atlas Township Purchase of Undeveloped Property on Gale for Future Use." It covers approximately seven acres at 7448 Gale Road for $135,000 (Atlas Township Resolution 25-23, September 10, 2025). The Citizen reported the board voted 5-0 at a special meeting to buy the vacant land, which sits just south of the township hall, "for future use of the township residents" (The Citizen, August 29, 2026).
The township already owned three acres bordering the new parcel (The Citizen, August 29, 2026).
"We can do a lot with 10 acres now," Busch said. "Prices are always going to increase and it's often difficult to find usable property for the township" (The Citizen, August 29, 2026).
Atlas also joined a five-community fire study this spring
The site plan follows a separate decision in May. The Atlas board voted 5-0 to spend $4,709.10 to join a regional fire study through the Southern Genesee Collaboration Group, which also includes Grand Blanc, Fenton and Mundy townships and the City of Fenton. The full study costs $47,900, with each community paying a proportional share (The Citizen, May 23, 2026).
"The goal is not to combine the fire departments, but rather to see what is in common and what is not in common, and determine if they can share resources," Busch said. "We discussed buying power, we could form a group and buy fire equipment, we'd be more likely to get grants (as a group)" (The Citizen, May 23, 2026).
Fire department experts led by Lewis G. Bender will coordinate the multiphase study. Focus areas include staffing levels, personnel needs, major equipment replacement schedules, cost forecasting, and service demands across township lines (The Citizen, May 23, 2026). The Genesee County View reported the study would run in two phases, with a first-phase report on staffing, equipment and services expected by Sept. 12 (Genesee County View, June 4, 2026). I did not find a published copy of that report as of this writing.
Atlas Township Fire Chief Ed Klimek said joining the study is "simply another opportunity to grow, adapt, and better serve the public" (The Citizen, May 23, 2026).
Mutual aid is already part of the job
An Aug. 26 fire showed how neighboring departments already work together. The Atlas Township Fire Department was dispatched at 11:19 a.m. to a storage barn fire next to Creekside Acres Event Barn, 7338 S. State Road, in the Village of Goodrich. Atlas units arrived at 11:24. Mutual aid was requested from the Davison and Brandon fire departments for tanker and manpower and from the Grand Blanc City Fire Department for engine and manpower. There were no injuries, and the fire was under control at about 11:49. The cause was under investigation (The Citizen, August 29, 2026).
What this means if you are buying or selling in Atlas Township
If you own or are considering a home near the township hall and 7448 Gale Road, the township now owns about 10 acres there and has paid for a site plan for a possible fire station next to the hall. Ask to see the site plan once it is presented to the board, and watch township agendas for any vote to move from planning to construction.
