Genesee County was established on March 28, 1835, after territories were taken from Lapeer, Shiawassee, and Saginaw counties. Initially, it was attached to Oakland County for judicial purposes. At its inception, the sole organized township was Grand Blanc, formed in 1833. It encompassed areas that now constitute Fenton, Mundy, Flint, Mount Morris, Genesee, Burton, Atlas, and Davison townships. (The survey areas of Atlas and Davison townships were initially part of Lapeer County.) The progression continued as Flint Township was established on March 2, 1836, separating from Grand Blanc. It included the township areas of Burton, Genesee, and Mount Morris, as well as additional areas that are now Clayton, Montrose, Flushing, Thetford, and Vienna. On April 4, 1836, the county was fully organized.

Further development occurred on July 26, 1836, when Argentine Township was organized. It encompassed two township survey areas, taking Fenton from Grand Blanc Township, along with the current Argentine area located west of Fenton. In the organizing act of March 11, 1837, Mundy and Vienna townships were established within the county. Mundy included an additional area to the west, while Vienna consisted of the northern tier of three township areas at that time, taking two areas from Flint Township.
