Goodwill Industries of Mid-Michigan opened its relocated Burton store and donation center at 4095 E. Court St., the former Art Van Furniture building, on Friday, April 10, 2026, moving out of Courtland Center mall across the street (ABC12, April 10, 2026). WNEM reported that the new location offers improved accessibility, including a drive-up donation door (WNEM, March 4, 2026).

The mall store closed April 4

Goodwill announced the move in early March. The Courtland Center store held special sales from March 29 through April 4 and closed for good on April 4 (WNEM, March 4, 2026). ABC12 reported that the new building offers more space than the Courtland Center store (ABC12, 2026).

The grand opening included a ribbon cutting, and the first 25 shoppers received swag bags with a Goodwill gift card (ABC12, April 10, 2026). Store hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday (WNEM, March 4, 2026).

"By shopping and donating at Goodwill, our communities are investing in local job training and employment services that change lives," said Alishea Oke, Goodwill's chief operating officer (Mid-Michigan NOW, April 10, 2026). ABC12 reported that store proceeds fund vocational training and employment services (ABC12, April 10, 2026).

The building sat empty after two furniture stores closed

Art Van Furniture closed its Burton store and all other locations after the company went bankrupt in 2020. Love's Furniture briefly operated the Court Street store before it closed, and the building sat vacant for a few years (ABC12, 2026).

In August 2025, before an opening date was announced, Banana 101.5 described the property as a 72,567-square-foot space built in 1987 and reported that it had been home to seasonal Spirit Halloween stores for a few years (Banana 101.5, August 18, 2025). That report is the only source I found for the building's size and year built.

Court Street has filled other big empty boxes

The Goodwill move is one of several changes along this stretch of Court Street. ABC12 reported that Burlington Coat Factory, Five Below, and Harbor Freight Tools moved into space formerly occupied by a long-vacant VG's grocery store in the Courtyard Plaza north of Court Street, and that a Michael's store also opened in that plaza, which ABC12 described as now nearly full of tenants. Across the road, America's Most Wanted 4x4, a company that modifies Jeeps into higher performance off-road vehicles, bought and renovated the former Lowe's home improvement store at 4274 E. Court St. At Courtland Center, a Ross Dress for Less store opened near the old Goodwill (ABC12, 2026).

Not every space is filled. ABC12 reported that the former Joann Fabric store at the mall remains vacant and that the Goodwill space on the east end of the mall would soon be vacant too. The mall's owners had not announced new tenants for either space (ABC12, 2026).

What the new store takes and does not take

The store sells everything from clothing and shoes to electronics, housewares, and furniture. Goodwill Industries of Mid Michigan does not accept mattresses, hazardous materials, large appliances, or broken or unsafe items, and donors with questions about specific items can contact their local Goodwill first (Banana 101.5, April 9, 2026). Goodwill lists its phone number as 810-762-9960 and its website as goodwillmidmichigan.org for store hours and donation guidelines (WNEM, March 4, 2026).

What buyers and sellers in Burton should check

If you are buying a home in Burton near East Court Street, drive past on a weekday evening and on a Saturday to see the traffic at the new store and the nearby shopping plazas for yourself. If you are selling nearby, know which buildings on Court Street are filled and which are still vacant, because buyers ask.
