Fenton and Baldwin Roads Near Grand Blanc Now Meet at a Roundabout. It Is Genesee County's 14th.

The intersection of Fenton Road and Baldwin Road reopened as a roundabout shortly after noon on August 15, 2026. WCRZ reported the opening, confirmed by the Genesee County Road Commission, and said there are now 14 completed roundabouts in the county (WCRZ, August 15, 2026). The intersection sits at the border of Mundy Township and Grand Blanc Township (WNEM, October 16, 2024).
The intersection was closed to all traffic from April to mid-August
The road commission's first release set construction to begin Monday, April 13, with a total closure to all traffic and a reopening expected in mid-August (Genesee County Road Commission, April 6, 2026). The start then moved. WNEM later reported that construction would begin Monday, April 20 (WNEM, April 8, 2026).
The posted detour sent drivers from Thompson Road to Torrey Road to Grand Blanc Road to Dort Highway, and back (Genesee County Road Commission, April 6, 2026). Not everyone followed it. By April 22, the road commission told Mid-Michigan NOW that more than 20 people had already been ticketed for ignoring the barricades (Mid-Michigan NOW, April 22, 2026).
In late July, WCRZ reported that officials expected the roundabout to open by mid-August, ahead of a September deadline, with no construction delays. The station reported that the detour ran more than 10 miles one way and that commuters had added at least 15 to 20 minutes to their drive time, affecting Mundy, Grand Blanc and Fenton townships (WCRZ, July 28, 2026).
The intersection had 33 crashes from 2020 to 2023
When the project was announced, the road commission cited the intersection's record: 33 crashes from 2020 through 2023, including two with serious injuries (WNEM, October 16, 2024). The case for a roundabout came down to the type of crash. A traditional intersection has about 32 conflict points, while a roundabout has eight, WNEM reported (WNEM, October 16, 2024).
"If you have those accidents, they're most likely to be side swipe type accidents, as opposed to T-bone, which can lead to more serious injuries," said Kylie Dontje, communications coordinator for the road commission (WNEM, October 16, 2024). WNEM reported Dontje said the roundabout would help accommodate increasing traffic in the growing area, make trips more efficient because drivers are "not stopped at a light," and be more beneficial for emergency service vehicles going through the intersection, which is near the hospital (WNEM, October 16, 2024).
Grand Blanc Township Supervisor Scott Bennett announced in October 2024 that state funding had been awarded to the road commission for the roundabout (WNEM, October 15, 2024).
The reported cost rose between announcement and construction
In 2024, the project was reported at $1.2 million, with $750,000 from a federal grant the road commission applied for through what Dontje called the Highway Improvement Safety Program, a competitive process (WNEM, October 16, 2024). By the time the intersection closed in April 2026, Mid-Michigan NOW reported the cost as just under $1.5 million, with funding primarily from the state (Mid-Michigan NOW, April 22, 2026). The road commission's own construction release did not list a cost (Genesee County Road Commission, April 6, 2026).
The county's roundabout program started at Hill and Elms in 2015
The first roundabout in the county's program was at Hill Road and Elms Road in 2015. Others named in coverage of the Fenton and Baldwin opening include Lapeer and Oak, and Morrish and Lennon (WCRZ, August 15, 2026).
Clayton Township's Elms and Lennon intersection is next in line
The road commission is designing a roundabout at Elms Road and Lennon Road in Clayton Township, with construction proposed for spring or summer 2027 at an estimated cost of about $1.6 million (WCRZ, August 15, 2026). Funding is expected to come from federal grants, the road commission and Clayton Township (WNEM, January 26, 2026).
The road commission scheduled a public open house on that project for February 19, 2026, at Clayton Township Hall, 2011 S. Morrish Road (WNEM, January 26, 2026). Clayton Township Supervisor Ted Henry said that when I-69 closes and traffic is diverted, "that's a major slowdown," and that the roundabout "should even the flow out so it's not such a burdensome job getting across" (Mid-Michigan NOW, February 19, 2026).
What this means if you are buying or selling near Fenton and Baldwin
For homes near this corner, the main change is how you get in and out. Buyers comparing commutes between Fenton and Grand Blanc should drive the new roundabout at the times they would actually travel, now that the detour is over. Sellers near the corner should describe the current route plainly in their listing.
